John Hastie's diary, 29th September [1797]: 'Newspaper "Kelso Mail" begun to be taken this first week of October between Knox [William Knox, schoolmaster, Edrom], James [James Herriot, farmer, Allanbank Mains, Stuartslaw and Kelloe Mains] and David Herriots [David Herriot, son of above James] and me twice a week, Mondays and Thursdays.'
