Additional Comments:

Letter from Leslie Stephen to Harriet Stephen (16/9/1872). From the editor's footnote: "In a letter to Minny dated 22 August he [Stephen] speaks of meeting Matthew Arnold, his brother, and son at Zermatt that day. Zermatt, then, must have been the site of the conversation in which Arnold told Stephen he was reading the third part of Literature and Dogma for the October and November issues. As is well known, the last two parts did not appear in the Cornhill, Stephen taking responsibility for their rejection."
