Additional comments:

Hamerton wrote a book entitled Art Essays (which almost matches the title RLS quotes), but I have not been able to find any other publication date for it earlier than 1880, New York. It is possible that the book was published elsewhere at an earlier date, or that RLS's letter, the date of which is not given precisely by Booth/Mehew, was written later than October 1879. The footnote on p 20 Booth/Mehew suggests that the book RLS refers to here is Thoughts About Art (published 1873).
