Taken from letter from TC to John A. Carlyle, dated 5th January 1830, written at Craigenputtoch, Dumfries. Pages 53-57 in this edition. Editor gives date of publication here as Foreign Review, V, 1830 - but there is also a reference to it in the notes to TC's letter to JAC of 18th September 1830, in which it is referred to as December 1829. Date range is an estimate based on date of this letter and date of the earlier possible publication date.
