Reading Experience:

Evidence:
"Biographical notices of painters were eagerly sought at this period; but my reading, upon the whole, was of rather a desultory nature, being fond of variety; accordingly a volume of some Magazine generally 'The European' was my companion at the tea-table. Topographical works, and tours through England, were books which pleased my taste."

Additional comments:

John Cole kept diaries throughout his life, and then used the diaries to produce a manuscript (An account of the life of John Cole of Scarborough, started in 1829, 18 volumes). Much of the substance of the manuscript is based on his diaries (and appears to have been copied from them). The original diaries are no longer extant.
