I had to travel for two nights & a day in a bullock waggon through the jungle in order to reach this place [Jaffna]. For discomfort it was simply hell. I had to lie on my back on the hard floor of the waggon & was battered & jolted along for 36 hours but I took one of the small Shakespeare volumes with me in my pocket, & it helped me to forget my aching bones.'
