Unluckily a very unpleasant affair was sprung on me and absorbed all my thinking energies for a fortnight. The evidence contained within this and other letters does not allow a more precise date range other than after 22 September when the Conrads returned from a visit to Liverpool and North Wales, but it is most likely to have been only two or three days this letter was written.
