Evidence: | Virginia Woolf to Vanessa Bell, 3 May 1934:
'We only got the Times yesterday and read about George [Duckworth]. Well, there's nothing
much to be said at this distance, in the wilds of Kerry. Poor old creature -- I wonder what
happened and why he was at Freshwater [...] here we are a great deal further and wilder than
if in Italy or Greece. We only see Irish papers, now and then; there are no towns, only an
occasional small fishing village and as we changed our plans, all our letters have gone wrong.
It was mere chance we found a copy of the Times lying about.' |
