Evidence: | 'After tea I went to the Yorick Club & read the papers. In the Evening Herald was a remarkable circular from the Solicitor General to the Honorary Magistrates in which was pointed out that it had become known some of the magistrates had received payment for the performance of their honorary duties & that this was highly improper Of course the magistrates as a whole were "highly honorable men" but some were not the "clean potato" & this circular was just a warning, that any magistrate taking "tip" & being found out would be kicked out of the Commission without delay, really a remarkable circular & highly flattering to the "great unpaid".' |
