Evidence: | Lady Harriet Cavendish to her grandmother, the Countess Dowager Spencer, 29 August 1807:
'I find Modern Europe really very entertaining, at least as much as is quite independant of the Author, Mr. Russell, who seems insupportably flippant and conceited, but my ignorance makes much of it new to me and I am continually deeply interested in the denouement of events that I dare say the rest of the world know as well as their Alphabets. I am now in the beginning of the 16th century, and am rather proud of being a little tired of the three great rivals -- Charles, Henry and Francis, but these are symptoms of ignorance that I cannot expect you to enter into.'
