Evidence: | Harriet Countess Granville to her sister, Lady Georgiana Morpeth, 1 January 1822:
'I think "Cain" most wicked, but not without feeling or passion. Parts of it are magnificent, and the effect of Granville [husband] reading it out loud to me was that I roared [i.e. wept] till I could neither hear nor see. The scene, too, in "Sardanapalus" where Myrrha says "Oh, frown not on me," and the speech, "Why do I love this man?" I think beautiful and affecting.' |
