Evidence: | Extracts from the journal of Joseph Kingsmill:
30 October: 'A very deaf prisoner was allowed a visit today from his friends in the same room. I permitted the visit to take place in my office, and hearing the poor man tell his friends of his great progress in reading, I gave him a book to read for them. They were quite surprised. It was extremely hard, certainly, to teach him; but he was very persevering, and now is enjoying the comfort of it.' |
