Evidence: | Copious MS notes in hand of George Otto Trevelyan. Dates of reading are: Oct 1902 (on a train in Italy); Sept 16 1905; May 12 1918 (at Welcombe). He notes the dates when Macaulay read his own copy of Demosthenes and says of the reading in 1837: "The last time in 2 days". In 1902: "Certainly Holmes is a marvellous scholar" but in 1918: "Holmes writes of oratory like a pedant, narrow, sceptical and critical, - who never heard a fine speech in his life." |
